New York Times | What is an Op-Doc?

Ever heard of a "Death Metal Grandma"? My guess is no. Most likely you would have never looked into a 96 year old woman who makes heavy metal music, but this is a unique topic the New York Times wants to show their viewers. An Op-Doc is an opinionated documentary about everyday people, and it gives them an opportunity to share personal experiences that viewers often never think about. These films give a glimpse into individuals lives, that shape how they go about their every day life. The film "The Bullet Inside Me" shares individual stories of wounded survivors from mass shootings that have happened around the country. When tragedies like mass shootings occur, we always recognize the people who lost their lives, but often forget about the people who survived but continue to suffer from their injuries from that day and will for the rest of their lives. A film about a 5 year old girl, "How does Life Live?", Willow asks a wide variety of questions to her mother with no reason other than curiosity. She asks her things like, How do you make water? And, Where do ants come from? You may be wondering why this could be a video worthy of presenting on the New York Times, but there is a reason the questions are set up in their unique order. The beginning of the video begins with lighthearted and mindless questions, and as you reach the end the questions become more thought out and meaningful to represent your path through life. is to represent a sequence of time throughout someones life. The point of these documentaries is to send a message, "Death metal Grandma" is showing that your life doesn't stop once you get older and no matter your age you can still try something new, and don't limit your possibilities. "The Bullet Inside Me" is to remind people of everyone who is harmed when a group of people are attacked. And the film made for 5 year old Willow was put together for the reason of the questions way they’re are set up, to represent a sequence of time throughout someones life.
