College Essay
No Negative Space
As an Engineer at C&S companies, my father would always come home from work with blue prints larger than my 7-year-old self. I would fill the blank side of these with anything that came to my imagination, and I would leave no negative space anywhere on the paper. I believe that is when my love for art began to bloom. Also, it was around that time where I started taking drawing classes at the Everson Museum throughout the summer. Ever since, I can remember I have been creating art with no instruction, because I was born with a passion to do it.
With the opportunity to go to school to pursue my passion for art and fashion, I want to learn and experience the most I can get, and use my knowledge to be valuable around my environment. I believe there are many benefits to expanding who you know and broadening your horizon. Therefore, I plan on using my resources to create a better connection with new people.
I personally have a lot of experience working within a group, between being in school, volunteering throughout my summers, and participating in a People to People’s Program one year. People to People is a travel program that invites students from all across America to go visit other countries and have the opportunity to experience a variety of different cultures. One year I had been nominated for this and was lucky enough to visit Western Canada along with other kids in Syracuse, Albany, and New Jersey. In Syracuse, we met once every month and prepared ourselves to work together, fundraise and learn how to go out of the country on our own. It was not easy to find the money to go on this trip, but we all worked together to do fundraising like selling cookie dough and bottle drives. One day we went out and picked up trash on the side of Route 481 next to Dewitt Town Hall. I really enjoy being put in a group setting because it gives me an outlet to use my voice. Often time I see my peers struggle to give their input to a group, so I definitely try and do my best to talk to them and help them realize that everyone’s opinion matters. Participating in this program was one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve had, and I hope to get the opportunity to do it again.
Having this experience of working well with a group has prepared me well for what college has to offer. Being involved with art has always been a part of my life, and it is finally the time where I can bring my journey to work towards my future. I cannot remember a time of my life that I did not have an interest for creativity. Therefore, taking this next step for my future will come great opportunities and incredible learning experiences.
